{"id":4206,"date":"2026-08-02T13:16:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-02T13:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/smartinvestingschronicle.com\/index.php\/2026\/08\/02\/politics-home-article-labours-bev-craig-wins-greater-manchester-mayoral-contest\/"},"modified":"2026-08-02T13:16:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-02T13:16:12","slug":"politics-home-article-labours-bev-craig-wins-greater-manchester-mayoral-contest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/smartinvestingschronicle.com\/index.php\/2026\/08\/02\/politics-home-article-labours-bev-craig-wins-greater-manchester-mayoral-contest\/","title":{"rendered":"Politics Home Article | Labour&#8217;s Bev Craig Wins Greater Manchester Mayoral Contest"},"content":{"rendered":"<div wp_automatic_readability=\"71.486118122161\">\n<div class=\"av-featImg\">\n<div class=\"av-main-img\">\n            <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n        <span class=\"av-readTime\">2 min read<\/span><span class=\"av-date\">31 July<\/span>&#13;<br \/>\n        &#13;\n    <\/p>\n<div class=\"av-standfirst\" wp_automatic_readability=\"10\">\n<p>Labour candidate Bev Craig has been elected as the next Mayor of Greater Manchester, securing a comfortable victory to succeed\u00a0the new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>She won\u00a0309,525 votes (around 66 per cent), with Reform UK candidate Sian Astley receiving\u00a0157,178\u00a0(around 34 per cent), once first and second preferences were taken into account.<\/p>\n<p>Craig, a close Burnham ally who has led Manchester\u00a0Council since 2021, said:\u00a0&#8220;I am honoured, I am humbled, and I stand ready to serve the three million people that live across this fantastic city region.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The turnout was relatively low at just over 25 per cent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Labour will now need to choose a new leader of the council to succeed Craig.<\/p>\n<p>The by-election in Manchester was triggered after Burnham won a parliamentary by-election in Makerfield, returning to Westminster as an MP and becoming PM just weeks later.<\/p>\n<p>The Greens were initially confident\u00a0of success in Greater Manchester, following their victory in the Gorton and Denton parliamentary by-election in February.<\/p>\n<p>Former leader of the Green Party Caroline Lucas told The House in June\u00a0that the party would be &#8220;throwing everything&#8221; at the contest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, after the first round of voting in Greater Manchester, the Greens were in third place on 12 per cent. Rupert Lowe&#8217;s Restore Britain got 9 per cent, the Conservatives 8 per cent, and the Liberal Democrats 3 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>The election used\u00a0a more proportional voting system than first-past-the-post, in which voters express a first and second choice.
